Coming from a working-class background, Charlie is passionate about telling authentic, human stories that explore underrepresented voices and communities within his independent films. He was able to do this via two programmes run by Screen Alliance Wales, sponsored by Sony Television Pictures and Creative Wales. Across these nine short documentaries he was the cinematographer, working alongside different directors and production manager Angela Clarke. Charlie's MA Grad film allowed him to develop this focus further, resulting in The People of Pont-y-pwl, a documentary about the working-class town where he grew up. The film won best student film at the ‘International Film Festival of Wales’ in Wrexham.
